Asda Launches First Ever Mid-Sized Jeans

November 30, 2009 · Filed Under Clothing, George, Shopping News · Comment

George at Asda has launched a range of jeans which are available in mid sizes 11,13 and 15. The move is in response to the results of a survey which shows that the average size of a British woman is 15 and not 16 as previously thought.

The study surveyed over 10,000 British women and suggests that 62 per cent consider themselves to be an ‘in-between size’ as opposed to the traditional sizes of 8, 10 or 12.

Fiona Lambert, brand director at George says: “One of the most common complaints from our customers is that they are in between sizes – this is back up by our extensive research. We all know there is nothing more unflattering than a pair of jeans that are too tight or loose. We aim to solve this dilemma with our mid-sized jeans – giving George customers great fitting jeans at a great price.”

Asda also found that 42 per cent of the survey’s respondents have between £20 to £49 to spend on jeans a year, with 20 per cent of the country having £19 or less.

The George mid-sized jeans retail at £12, and will be available online or at selected Asda stores.

Fresh Produce Most Environmentally Friendly

November 27, 2009 · Filed Under Environment, Food, Shopping News · Comment

A conference in Sweden discussing environmentally friendly produce production was told that fresh produce is amongst the most environment friendly foods available.

The conference was organized by the Swedish European Union presidency and was held as part of the build up to the Copenhagen UN Climate Change Conference.

Delegates to the conference made the point that fresh produce generates a smaller average carbon footprint than foods such as cheese meat and coffee.

Data from a study conducted in 2002 suggests that the average carbon emission resulting from a kilogram of fresh green vegetables was 1.67 Kg compared with 19.30 Kg per kilogram of beef.

Delegates acknowledged that much of the carbon emissions associated with food production are as a result of transportation, and that improvements could be made to the supply chain.Currently, 25-30% of total consumption related to greenhouse gas emissions are estimated to come from farm-to-fork food production.

Asda Helps Males Who Have Man Boobs With New Body Sculpt Vest

November 26, 2009 · Filed Under Clothing, George, Shopping News · 13 Comments

George at Asda has launched a new Body Sculpt Vest for men, which is designed to give those of us (especially me!!), an easy way to disguise man boobs (moobs), beer belly’s and love handles, giving us the ability to have that six pack look in an instant.

The vest, designed to give men help in achieving that sculpted look, is available for the bargain price of £7, and if you know someone who could use a helping hand in that department, it may even make a great idea for an inexpensive Christmas present. Though we suggest you make sure that they won’t take it the wrong way first!!

The vest uses elastene panels and durable fabric, and was developed in response to growing demand from me who are increasingly becoming body conscious, or at least partners who would like them to.

New data from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) suggests that the trend for men opting for elective breast reduction surgery is rapidly growing, and is something perhaps I need to start thinking about seriously!!

A recent survey commissioned by Asda shows that 60 per cent of women say their spouses or partners have developed moobs as a result of weight gain, and over half of women surveyed say they hoped or would like their partner to change their body shape.

Fiona Lambert, Brand Director at George, said: “We were surprised to hear the results of this survey and were amazed at how many men had considered surgery. Women have control underwear and push-up bras so why shouldn’t men have a little help too?”

The vest is available from selected Asda stores from this week for just £7.

Asda Helps With Flood Relief Effort

November 25, 2009 · Filed Under Food, Shopping News · 2 Comments

UK retail chain Asda made an important contribution to the UK flood relief effort, sending home delivery vans packed with food, clothing and other essential items to community centres in Cumbria on Tuesday.

The Asda foundation and staff picked up the tab for the supplies, whilst staff from Asda Carlisle pitched in by helping deliver the relief to Workington and Cockermouth.

Asda sent three vans packed to the brim with fresh food, milk, nappies, coffee, tea, cereal and warm clothing, that were received by grateful volunteers at the relief centres.

Asda sent the supplies in response to a request from Workington Council leader Judith Glynn for assistance.

Workington has been badly affected by the floods, losing two of its bridges, leaving people stranded and unable to reach the main shopping centre and facing a 30 mile drive to reach the nearest supermarket.

Asda Carlisle store manager Alison Hanford, who personally delivered some of Asda’s emergency supplies to Northside Community Centre said: “There was a great community spirit. People helped us offload the vans. It makes you count your blessings when you get out and see people in circumstances like that and they’re just getting on with it. The people we saw were coping fantastically well.”

British Supermarkets Achieve 5.1 Billion Cut In Plastic Bag Usage

November 24, 2009 · Filed Under Environment, Shopping News · Comment

The top UK retailers and supermarket chains have reduced the number of plastic bags they use by nearly 5.1 billion a year.

Last year a retail group comprising seven supermarket chains signed up voluntarily, to an initiative designed to reduce their impact on the environment, through the reduction of single-use carrier bags, by half the amount that were used in 2006.

Asda, Tesco, Waitrose, Sainsbury’s, the Co-op, Somerfield and Marks and Spencer between them, slashed the number of bags handed out each month to customers by 48 per cent, from 870 million distributed monthly in 2006 to 452 million distributed monthly last year, just short of a full fifty per cent reduction.

Between them, supermarkets used schemes such as levying charges for plastic carrier bags and providing customers incentives for bringing re-usable bags, enabling the retailers to become more eco-friendly.

The reduction in usage of bags has meant there has been a 56 per cent reduction in the amount of plastic used to manufacture the bags, and most impressive, 4,000 tonnes of less waste destined for landfills every month.

Director General of the British Retail Consortium, Stephen Robertson said the results were incredible given that supermarket sales had increased by 5 per cent a year during the course of the initiative.

“Changing customer habits on this scale, this quickly, isn’t easy. But it’s a huge testament to customers, who’ve switched to bags for life and cut bag usage. Hard working retail staff also deserve credit, as do supermarkets. “he said.

Environment Secretary Hilary Benn added: “This is a great achievement by the seven supermarkets and their customers and it shows that by working together, we really can change our bag habits.”

“The target of a 50 per cent reduction was only narrowly missed and retailers have really put a lot into this in the last six months.”

Environmentalists say plastic bags can take up to 1,000 years to disintegrate and pose threats to marine life, birds and other animals.

Supermarket Beer Sales Will Surpass Pub Sales By 2010

November 20, 2009 · Filed Under Shopping News · Comment

Supermarket and off license sales of beer will overtake the amount sold in pubs by as early as next year.

Cut price offers for beer from retailers, coupled with the recession is encouraging money conscious Britons to drink at home rather than down the pub.

The knock on effect of cheap alcohol available from supermarkets has been loss of sales at pubs, forcing in some cases, closures.

Nielsen, a market research firm, noted that alcohol sales including beer, wine and spirits were seeing monthly declines from between 8-11 per cent as a result of cheap alcohol being sold by supermarkets.

Beer which is sold in pubs and restaurants is known as ‘on-trade’ sales, and makes up approximately 58 per cent of total sales. Beer sold elsewhere or in supermarkets and off licenses is known as ‘off-trade’ and makes up 42 per cent of total sales..

Nielsen believes that off-trade beer sales will exceed on-trade sales by 2010, and that pub owners, companies and brewers must review their pricing in order to lure their customers back into pubs.

Pubs selling alcohol only are having a harder time of it than those selling food. It is hoped the World Cup will have a positive effect on the market but consumers also look where they get value for money and brewers need to look at producing value beers.

Kate Moss Dress One Of Asda’s Top Selling Products Of The Year

November 19, 2009 · Filed Under Clothing, George, Shopping News · Comment

A dress worn by former super model Kate Moss, a replica of which was sold by supermarket chain Asda, sold out within hours of going on sale in July, becoming one of the supermarket’s best selling products of the year.

Ironically the supermodel has a clothing range on sale at rival retailer Topshop.

Moss was spotted earlier in the year on a night out, wearing a futuristic silver mini-dress with shoulder pads worth £4,000.

The Balmain Autumn/Winter 2009 dress inspired Asda’s George clothing brand to produce a replica piece.

The limited edition piece went on sale at Asda in July for the bargain price of just £16, resulting in the item becoming an instant hit with the retailers’ female customers. Shoppers snapped up the entire stock of the dress in just one afternoon.

George brand director Fiona Lambert said: “At a time of recession when people are finding it hard, we are seeing that people are looking back to the ’80s when fashion was fun, loud and over the top.

“The exaggerated boulder shoulder is the statement of the season. It’s all about super power dressing and OTT glamour.”

Asda Launches Low Carbon Beef Range

November 18, 2009 · Filed Under Asda Groceries, Food, Shopping News · Comment

In a bid to bolster its environmentally friendly credentials even further, Asda Groceries has launched a range of low carbon beef.

The retailer says the new range has “the lowest carbon footprint in the industry” and is produced using one third less CO2 than regular beef.

The savings come from reducing the lifespan of cattle from the standard 24 months, to between nine and eleven months.

Since the animals used to produce the beef are dairy bulls, the carbon dioxide emitted is technically classified as a by-product of milk production, and the reduction in emissions can be used to offset those from the dairy farming process.

Reducing the age at which cattle is actually brought to market to between 9-11 months results in significantly lower carbon emissions than standard cattle, which is brought to market after 24 months.

The resulting smaller animal size means that portions can be managed more easily, resulting in lower retail prices to standard beef.

Pearce Hughes, Asda’s agriculture development manager, said: “We’ve been working on this programme for a number of years and are proud to finally see it come into fruition.”

“We wanted to create a low carbon beef that was both accessible to our consumers and viable for our farmers.”

“Should the product prove successful, we could be looking to extend it into our successful ‘Respectful’ low carbon range of free range eggs “
