Asda Begins Selling Bollywood DVD’s
UK retail giant Asda with become the first British supermarket chain to begin selling Bollywood film titles at its stores.
Asda started selling classic Bollywood movies at its stores nationwide last Saturday, with titles costing as little as £2.
Old classics, such as Sholay, an action flick from the seventies, and perhaps the most successful Bollywood film of all time costs just £5 and is available side by side with modern hits such as Heroes which costs £7.
Asda says the move to start stocking Bollywod DVD’s was in response to growing consumer demand, with films such as Slumdog Millionaire and Bend it Like Bekham helping to widen the appeal of Indian cinema in Britain.
Asda spokeswoman Noor Ali said: “Bollywood cinema is growing in popularity and is now enjoyed all over the world.”
“Now all our customers can have the ultimate Indian night in with a meal from one of our curry counters, Bombay mix and sweets.”
Bollywood, which is a moniker for the Indian film industry producing films from Mumbai is estimated to be worth roughly £22.3 billion and is perhaps the single most prolific film producer, making over 800 movies every year.

Campaign Slams Supermarket Bakeries As Tanning Salon For Baguettes
A report recently released by the Real Bread Campaign has branded the bakeries of supermarket chains as being nothing more than tanning salons for baguettes.
In a scathingly critical report, the campaign highlights a common practice by many retailers of freezing pre baked loaves of bread, and then re-baking them in store, which has the effect of softening the loaves and making their crusts crunchier.
The campaign says it contacted six retail chains, and found that only Marks and Spencer stocked bread baked in-store that met the campaign’s definition of ‘Real Bread’ , i.e, made with flour, water, yeast and salt, with all natural ingredients and using no processing aid.
The Real Bread Campaign seeks to highlight the increasing loss of jobs in the bakery industry and the worrying trend of including hidden additives in bread.
According to the report many supermarkets make use of a legal loophole which does not force them to disclose a number of additives on their bread labels.
By law, the burden falls on the customer to ask what additives are in the bread rather than the responsibility falling on the retailers to publish.
According to the Food Labelling Regulations 1996, processing aids such as enzymes used to affect colouration and prolong softness need not be declared at all, even if a customer asks for an ingredient list.
The campaign claims that loaves of bread that have been re-baked, which many retailers sell often go stale much faster and requires far more energy to produce.

Asda Drops Couple Of Fairtrade Coffee Brands From Shelves
UK supermarket giant Asda has removed two Fairtrade coffee brands from its shelves in response to slumping sales of the products.
Asda axed the Clipper and Cafédirect Fairtrade coffee brands from its range of Fairtrade products after both coffee brands performed poorly during 2009.
The supermarket chain says it will replace the dropped brands with three new Extra Special own label coffees. Two of the replacement brands are Rainforest Alliance certified, whilst the third is Fairtrade certified.
Asda’s Fairtrade product range is 20 strong and offers everything from bananas, tea, wine and oranges.
Many predict that 2010 will be the breakout year for the Fairtrade mark, with many manufacturers adopting the ethical brand.

Asda Cuts Nearly 200 Dairy Farmers From Supply Chain
UK retailer Asda has cut as many as 200 dairy farmers as it seeks to cull a portion of its supply chain due to oversupply.
During an interview on the BBC’s Radio 4, an Asda spokesperson said the company made the decision to reduce the number of dedicated farmers it employs by nearly half, from 500 to 300, and did so simply because the number of farmers it used were producing more milk than it needed,
The spokesperson went on to add that the reduction in dairy farmers would mean the remaining farmers on its books would have further opportunities.
However those farmers cut by the retail chain would see their incomes fall by thousands of pounds a year.
David Brown, a dairy farmer based near Harrogate in North Yorkshire, said: “We got a letter saying Asda have been looking at the dedicated farmer pool and they have reduced it and unfortunately we will no longer be supplying milk to Asda .”
“It means I am going to lose somewhere in the region of £5,000 a year, which basically means there will be no future investment at this farm – that will be it.”

First Strawberries Of Season On Sale At UK Supermarkets
Signalling the beginning of spring, and the official end to winter, British strawberries went on sale at supermarkets across the country last week.
Strawberries went on sale at 25 Morrisons retail outlets in the South of England, with the UK’s largest retailer Tesco confirming they are now available in 15 stores.
The other major retailers including Asda, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose are all expected to begin stocking the first British grown strawberry crop of 2010 in the next few days.
Tesco strawberry buyer Ben Reed said: “Not only are we enjoying the first warm weather of the year this week but we’ve also now got the first British strawberries which means that summer is well and truly on the way.”
“The arrival of the first home grown strawberries is extremely significant – not only does it herald the start of British Summer Time but it is also the start of the UK growing season.”
“Many shoppers think of the first home grown strawberries as being bitter and hard but the ones we’ve got our hands on are delicious.”
Nicki Baggott, soft fruit buyer for Waitrose, added: “The first British strawberry signifies the end of winter and heralds the arrival of spring. This explains why it’s the ultimate feel good fruit – and one which retailers are clamouring to get on shelves as early as they can.”

Waitrose Unveils Ambitious Expansion Plan For 2010
Upmarket grocery retail chain Waitrose has unveiled ambitious plans to double its sales and share of the British grocery market during the next ten years.
In an interview with Retail Week, Waitrose chief, Mark Price says he would like the retailer to increase its market share from the current 4.3 per cent to around 8 per cent. An increase in market share of that size would mean that the retailer’s sales would jump from £5 billion at present, to £10 billion by 2020.
Mr. Prices says the retailer intends to focus on opening new stores both domestically and internationally. Waitrose expects to open at least ten new outlets across the UK during 2010, some of which will be smaller convenience stores. The company expects to open a further 30 stores during 2011.
Mr. Price, who was named retail leader of the year at the Retail Week awards says that the company intends to build upon its existing partnerships such as the one it has with health and beauty chain Boots.
Mr. Price expects Waitrose to end the year as the fastest growing supermarket chain for the second consecutive year.
“The economy will give us nothing this year and there will be no easy wins, but our plans are well developed and we’re confident,” he said.
Waitrose, the grocery division of the John Lewis Partnership is widely expected to launch a smaller convenience store format within the next couple of months.
