Asda Says Burns Night Essentials Sales Rocket

January 26, 2010 · Filed Under ASDA, Asda Groceries, Shopping News · Comment

UK retailer Asda says sales of Burns Night products have experienced a huge increase after the supermarket rolled back prices on products and shoppers opted to celebrate at home this month.

Scottish Kestrel potatoes sales rocketed by 700 per cent, whilst there was a 200 per cent leap in Haggis sales, and Scottish Whiskey purchases rose by 40 per cent.

The strong sales come on the back of a roll-back on Burns Night prices with offers such as £1 on Halls 454g Haggis.

Asda says the increase in sales reflects the fact that shoppers this year prefer to entertain at home.

In an effort to help customers of its Scottish store prepare for a Burns Night indoors this year, the retailer at its Hamilton store held a Haggis workshop and is offering shoppers the chance to win their own Burns Night meal at home, through a special online poetry competition.

Paul Dover, Customer Planning Manager for Local in Scotland, said: “This is our most ambitious Burns Night project yet and we think it’s the perfect way to get our customers and colleagues engaged with the true spirit of Burns Night. With sales already showing the popularity of our Scottish products price Rollback, I’m sure this is going to be a Burns Night to remember for our customers”.

Waitrose UK’s Top Performing Grocery Retailer During Holiday Season

January 11, 2010 · Filed Under Asda Groceries, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Shopping News, Tesco, Waitrose · Comment

The top performing UK grocery retailer over the holiday season turns out to be Waitrose, who managed to record a 14 per cent year on year rise in sales growth during the four weeks ending Boxing Day.

According to market research firm Nielsen, the upmarket food and grocery retailer saw sales increase by 13.6 per cent during the quarter ending December 26th, compared with the same time frame in the previous year.

Waitrose sales increase was nearly double the rate recorded by the dominant British grocery retailer Tesco. The UK’s largest supermarket chain trailed its rivals during the period, registering growth of 7.4 per cent during the course of the four weeks. Tesco registered the lowest sales growth for the period.

Morrisons who placed second on the list recorded 11.8 per cent growth in sales during the holiday season, followed by Asda who registered an 8.6 per cent increase in its sales during the period. Sainsbury’s was fourth on the list, and saw a sales increase of 7.7 per cent during the Christmas shopping season.

Commenting on the results, Nielsen said the grocery market experienced a “robust” December and a “particularly strong” Christmas and said the sector had grown by an aggregate of 6.7 per cent during the four week period.

A Nielsen spokesman said “We had a slow start to the season and from the figures it looks like consumers held back until the final fortnight where we saw some exceptional growth. The level of promotional activity in supermarkets usually drops off in December but it remained at 35pc this year. Shoppers shared in the bonanza – price cuts, bigger than ever promotions and loyalty scheme give-aways all helped encourage shoppers to spend.”

Asda Launches Largest Ever Price Cut On Essential Items In Over A Decade

January 7, 2010 · Filed Under Asda Groceries, Online Shopping, Shopping News · Comment

Retail giant Asda is launching its largest ever price cut campaign in over a decade, and says it will cut the price of more than one in five or 20 per cent of its product lines across its stores.

The UK’s second largest retailers says it will cut prices on more than 3,600 essentials, including milk, potatoes, bananas, cheese and rice, and that prices will be cut by an average of 13 per cent during January.

Asda says the price cuts will be for a long duration with most price cuts expected to last from between six to twelve weeks.

Darren Blackhurst, Asda’s chief merchandising officer, said: “People are sick and tired of being tricked and deceived by dodgy claims and bogus bogofs (buy one get one free deals). Unlike our rivals, we’re lowering prices on a more permanent basis on the products people want to buy, not just products we want to sell them. We also want people to check our prices every time they shop. “

The move follows quickly on the heels of rival Tesco’s announcement less than a week ago that it would introduce as many as 12,000 special offers that would save its customers an estimated £280 million.

Both Tesco and Asda have pledged to maintain VAT at 15 per cent for a large number of non food products in the new year, despite the fact that the government has increased VAT to its former level of 17.5 per cent.

Asda’s New Slogan Remarkably Similar To Old Sainsbury’s Marketing Campaign

December 22, 2009 · Filed Under Asda Groceries, Shopping News · Comment

UK supermarket chain Asda has borrowed a slogan previously used by rival Sainsbury’s for its new advertising campaign as it seeks to attract upmarket clientèle to its stores in the build up to Christmas.

The catchphrase “Good food costs less at Asda” began appearing in full page newspaper advertisements last Sunday, and is very similar to the ‘Good food costs less at Sainsbury’s campaign Sainsbury’s ran for nearly 30 years between 1959 and 1991.

Asda says it is using the slogan to help promote is Extra Special premium food product range, and says it is doing so because the phrase reflects the value and quality of its groceries.

Asda watchers say that this is the first time during the recession that the retailer is emphasising the quality of its good as opposed to its “everyday low prices” message it normally runs with. Many see it as an effort by the supermarket to win customers over from upmarket rivals.

Sainsbury’s says that despite the similarity between the two slogans, it did not intend to pursue the matter.

A spokesman for the retailer said: “Good food costs less at Sainsbury’s’ is a registered trademark but we don’t own the sentence ‘good food costs less. There has been no trademark infringement and we are flattered that Asda has chosen to follow in our footsteps.”

Asda’s Ridiculously Low Priced Salmon Is No Fishy Business

December 18, 2009 · Filed Under Asda Groceries, Shopping News · Comment

Offer Expired

Asda’s latest unbelievable offer to lure Christmas shoppers into its stores this December is no fishy business with the retailer offer an entire Alaskan pink salmon for the remarkably low price of just £3.

The supermarket chain says it has been able to reduce prices to that level from the original £7 price by cutting shipping costs.

A 1.2 Kilo fish is enough to feed a family of eight and would mean that each member of the family is fed for the ridiculously low cost of just 39p a person.

The unbelievably low prices is even more astounding when you compare the cost of salmon with that of other retailers.

M&S and Selfridges both sell whole salmon for around £20.

Asda rivals Sainsbury’s and Tesco have yet to be able to match Asda’s low price for an equivalent product.

An Asda spokesman told The Daily Mail: “It is the lowest-priced salmon on the market. It is sustainably sourced from Alaska where the fish are caught in the wild and frozen immediately to ensure the best quality and flavour.”

The frozen salmon is available in store on the end of a row near the party food. However a selection salmon can be ordered online from Asda.

The Battle For Shoppers Hearts And Minds Intensifies

December 8, 2009 · Filed Under Asda Groceries, Shopping News, Tesco · Comment

The battle for consumers hearts and minds between perennial supermarket rivals Asda and Tesco’s is heating up as the retailers go head to head to prove to shoppers just who has the lowest priced basket of goods.

Each chain claims to have the lowest priced basket, with the latest salvo being fired by Tesco, who in their latest series of advertisements suggests that of the 30 million or so shopping trips to the supermarket made ever week in the UK, twice as many baskets would have cost more at Asda.

Asda has responded to the advertisement by complaining to the Advertising Standards Authority, as well as Clearcast, the regulator responsible for determining the fairness and accuracy of television advertising.

Asda suggests that the Tesco claim is biased and based on Clubcard users, and the war has intensified to the point that neither retailer seems to be willing to back down.

According to International Supermarket news, who quoted an unnamed source, Asda has stopped short of mounting a full legal challenge but has made overtures to its rival.

Last month analysts from Asda visited Tesco’s head office in a bid to provide a full and in-depth examination of Tesco’s claims. The visit is the first of its kind to ever be agreed between the two rivals.

Tesco broadened its advertising campaign last week in include Morrison’s and it is expected that Sainsbury’s will also be included this weekend as well.

Asda Launches Low Carbon Beef Range

November 18, 2009 · Filed Under Asda Groceries, Food, Shopping News · Comment

In a bid to bolster its environmentally friendly credentials even further, Asda Groceries has launched a range of low carbon beef.

The retailer says the new range has “the lowest carbon footprint in the industry” and is produced using one third less CO2 than regular beef.

The savings come from reducing the lifespan of cattle from the standard 24 months, to between nine and eleven months.

Since the animals used to produce the beef are dairy bulls, the carbon dioxide emitted is technically classified as a by-product of milk production, and the reduction in emissions can be used to offset those from the dairy farming process.

Reducing the age at which cattle is actually brought to market to between 9-11 months results in significantly lower carbon emissions than standard cattle, which is brought to market after 24 months.

The resulting smaller animal size means that portions can be managed more easily, resulting in lower retail prices to standard beef.

Pearce Hughes, Asda’s agriculture development manager, said: “We’ve been working on this programme for a number of years and are proud to finally see it come into fruition.”

“We wanted to create a low carbon beef that was both accessible to our consumers and viable for our farmers.”

“Should the product prove successful, we could be looking to extend it into our successful ‘Respectful’ low carbon range of free range eggs “
