Asda Launches First World Store
In an effort to meet the requirements of local shoppers and expand its customer base, UK supermarket giant Asda, launched its first World Food Store in West London.
The store is located in Hounslow, an extremely multi-cultural area of West London, and offers a diverse range of food items, including cuisines from Poland, Ireland, The Mediterranean and The Caribbean. The outlet also sells ethnic clothing and homeware items.
The store has a Polish Deli counter run by Polish employees of Asda, and a Halal meat counter that is run by a local Halal butcher.
Asda said it launched the World Food store in direct response to its Hounslow customers wishes, who all said they wanted the ability to purchase their weekly grocery requirements from a single store.
A company statement said: “Brits are known for their multi-multiculturalism and Asda has embraced this by bringing authentic delicacies and delights from all around the globe for customers of every cultural background to enjoy or discover for the first time.”
“In the last year we have seen a 42 per cent year-on-year rise in sales of ethnic products across our stores, off the back of an 83 per cent increase last year, showing that there is a real appetite for diverse and specialist foods from across the world.”
“We felt it was the right time to launch our first World Food store in Hounslow which will help broaden our customer base and make Asda the supermarket of choice for all.”
If the concept is successful in Hounslow, the World Food Store format will be rolled out nationally across the UK over the next year.
