Pot Of Marmite Now Costs More Than Petrol

August 11, 2010 · Filed Under Food, Groceries, Sainsbury's, Shopping News, Waitrose · Comment

According to a report in the Mail last Sunday, a pot of Marmite now costs more than the price of a gallon of petrol or a rump steak.

According to the report, the cost of a 500 gram jar of the dark stuff has risen by 25 per cent over the last half decade and is currently sold at £5.03 at Sainsbury’s and £5.38 at Waitrose a cost which exceeds the price of a gallon of petrol in most parts of Britain.

Around 60 million jars of the yeast spread are produced every year, and despite the increase in price, sales of the product increased by 2 per cent in the last year.

Unilever, the company which owns the Marmite name, refused to offer an explanation for the steep price rise.

Adam Leyland, editor of The Grocer magazine, said: “Compared with bread, which has gone up by around 40 per cent in price over the past five years, this is a relatively modest rise.”

“But Marmite does not appear to contain any ingredients that have been subject to sharp price hikes. This could be a case of Unilever trying to increase its profit margins.”

Sales Growth At British Supermarkets Falls

April 7, 2010 · Filed Under Asda Groceries, Groceries, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Shopping News, Tesco · Comment

Sales growth at British supermarket chains has slowed to its lowest pace in nearly three years, largely as a result of a sharp drop in food price inflation according to the results of a new survey.

The study conducted by market research firm Kantar Worldpanel suggests that aggregate sales across all British supermarkets grew by 3.6 per cent year on year during the quarter ending March 21st, the slowest growth rate since August 2007.

Kantar Worldpanel says the reason for the slowdown was due to lower food price inflation which fell to 1.8 per cent compared with 9.1 per cent in the same time period during the previous year.

” While lower inflation has had a dampening effect on retailer growth, it also “brings benefits to consumers. The latest figures suggest that shoppers are taking advantage of slower grocery price increases by trading up to more expensive lines such as Tesco Finest,” Kantar Worldpanel ‘s Fraser McKevitt said.

According to the results of the survey, Morrison’s was the strongest performer amongst the Big Four grocery retailers, with sales increasing by 7.8 per cent year on year during the quarter ending March 21st.

Next was Sainsbury’s with sales rising by 4.6 per cent, followed by Tesco (4.1 per cent) and Asda (2.7 per cent).

Campaign Slams Supermarket Bakeries As Tanning Salon For Baguettes

A report recently released by the Real Bread Campaign has branded the bakeries of supermarket chains as being nothing more than tanning salons for baguettes.

In a scathingly critical report, the campaign highlights a common practice by many retailers of freezing pre baked loaves of bread, and then re-baking them in store, which has the effect of softening the loaves and making their crusts crunchier.

The campaign says it contacted six retail chains, and found that only Marks and Spencer stocked bread baked in-store that met the campaign’s definition of ‘Real Bread’ , i.e, made with flour, water, yeast and salt, with all natural ingredients and using no processing aid.

The Real Bread Campaign seeks to highlight the increasing loss of jobs in the bakery industry and the worrying trend of including hidden additives in bread.

According to the report many supermarkets make use of a legal loophole which does not force them to disclose a number of additives on their bread labels.

By law, the burden falls on the customer to ask what additives are in the bread rather than the responsibility falling on the retailers to publish.

According to the Food Labelling Regulations 1996, processing aids such as enzymes used to affect colouration and prolong softness need not be declared at all, even if a customer asks for an ingredient list.

The campaign claims that loaves of bread that have been re-baked, which many retailers sell often go stale much faster and requires far more energy to produce.

Asda Drops Couple Of Fairtrade Coffee Brands From Shelves

March 29, 2010 · Filed Under Asda Groceries, Groceries, Shopping News · Comment

UK supermarket giant Asda has removed two Fairtrade coffee brands from its shelves in response to slumping sales of the products.

Asda axed the Clipper and Cafédirect Fairtrade coffee brands from its range of Fairtrade products after both coffee brands performed poorly during 2009.

The supermarket chain says it will replace the dropped brands with three new Extra Special own label coffees. Two of the replacement brands are Rainforest Alliance certified, whilst the third is Fairtrade certified.

Asda’s Fairtrade product range is 20 strong and offers everything from bananas, tea, wine and oranges.

Many predict that 2010 will be the breakout year for the Fairtrade mark, with many manufacturers adopting the ethical brand.

Asda Cuts Nearly 200 Dairy Farmers From Supply Chain

March 26, 2010 · Filed Under Groceries, Shopping News · Comment

UK retailer Asda has cut as many as 200 dairy farmers as it seeks to cull a portion of its supply chain due to oversupply.

During an interview on the BBC’s Radio 4, an Asda spokesperson said the company made the decision to reduce the number of dedicated farmers it employs by nearly half, from 500 to 300, and did so simply because the number of farmers it used were producing more milk than it needed,

The spokesperson went on to add that the reduction in dairy farmers would mean the remaining farmers on its books would have further opportunities.

However those farmers cut by the retail chain would see their incomes fall by thousands of pounds a year.

David Brown, a dairy farmer based near Harrogate in North Yorkshire, said: “We got a letter saying Asda have been looking at the dedicated farmer pool and they have reduced it and unfortunately we will no longer be supplying milk to Asda .”

“It means I am going to lose somewhere in the region of £5,000 a year, which basically means there will be no future investment at this farm – that will be it.”
