Small Business Worried By Number Of Supermarkets

March 10, 2010 · Filed Under ASDA, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Shopping News, Tesco · Comment

New data released by the newspaper the Daily Mail suggests that more than two fifths of towns in Britain have at least five supermarket outlets within a ten minute drive of one another.

The report suggests that 42 per cent of all British towns were in such a position, with some chains owning more than one outlet within a ten minute drive of one other. The finding has alarmed small business.

David Amess, Conservative MP and and chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Small Shops Group is calling for a government inquiry into the supermarket industry.

Mr. Amess would like the government to investigate claims that supermarket retail chains are choking high street business.  Mr. Amess claims that the retailers, through the employment of high priced lawyers, are able to overturn decisions taken by local authority.

The rise of the supermarket in the UK contrasts significantly with the number of independent retailers, which has declined considerably from 500,000 in 145, to just 35,500 today.

The ‘big four’ supermarkets – Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s and Tesco have captured nearly 75 per cent of the £80 billion grocery sector.

Add to the mix the fact that the UK entered recession in 2008, and the story for independent retailers has not been good, with more than 2000 going out of business last year.

The diversification of supermarkets into multiple consumer segments has made it even harder for small businesses to be successful.

Sales Growth At British Supermarkets Slows

March 9, 2010 · Filed Under ASDA, Sainsbury's, Shopping News, Tesco · Comment

A new report issued by market research firm Kantar Worldpanel suggests that growth in sales at leading British supermarket chains slowed down to their lowest level in nearly two years.

The pace of growth in the market slowed to 5 per cent during the quarter ending February 21st, compared with 5.2 per cent in the preceding quarter.

A spokesperson for the research firm says the slow down in growth could be as a result of price cuts and price wars undertaken by many retailers. Some analysts suggests however that customer loyalty may be declining as a result of the economic downturn.

Asda was the leading beneficiary in February, after having seen declines in January. The retailer engaged in an aggressive marketing campaign which produced sales growth of 3.3 per cent during February compared with 2,1 per cent in January.

Despite the increase, Asda’s market share has fallen to 17 per cent from 17.2 per cent as perennial rival Tesco gained at its expense, increasing its market share by 0.3 per cent to 30.4 per cent of the total market after aggressively cutting its prices.

Some analysts have expressed concern at the performance of Sainsbury’s, whom many believe lags the traditional market leaders Tesco and Asda.

Shoppers Should Check Salt Content When Buying “Free From” Products

March 1, 2010 · Filed Under ASDA, Food, Groceries · Comment

A lot of dairy free, wheat and gluten products available on supermarket store shelves have been shown to contain high salt levels, according to new research publish by the Consensus Action on Salt and Health (CASH).

CASH, established to promote awareness of the damage that results from excessive salt intake, studied 71 own label products from five UK supermarket chains which are labelled as “free from” and found that over 50 per cent contain larger amounts of salt than standard versions of the product that were also being sold by retailers.

Some of the products tested possessed more than six times the salt levels as standard product comparables, with a third of products tested being found to contain lower levels of salt.

All five supermarket chains that were tested, stocked products, some of which were labelled as ‘free from’ that contained higher levels of salt than standard versions of the product.

Products which fared worse than their standard products counterparts include, Sainsbury’s Free From Jaffa Cakes, Morrisons’ Free From Chocolate Chip Cookies.

Products which contain high levels of salt pose risks of heart disease, since salt consumption is linked to high blood pressure.

Graham MacGregor, chairman of CASH, said: “In general, it has been the supermarket own-label products that have led the way in salt reduction, but it seems that own-label products for people with existing health problems have not been a top priority for the retailers.”

“They must now reformulate the higher-salt products immediately, so that people suffering from Coeliac disease or other related conditions do not have to put their health in further jeopardy.”

The British Heart Foundation says the salt levels found in basic food items such as bread, that are eaten on a daily basis, was a cause for concern.

A spokeswoman for the British Nutrition Foundation said: “The advice for people selecting ‘free from’ foods is the same as for other consumers buying any foods – check the labels. Be savvy about what you buy.

Mr. Macgregor added that the recommended daily maximum salt consumption limit is 6 grams a day.

Fairtrade Fortnight 22nd February To March 7th

February 24, 2010 · Filed Under Shopping News · Comment

Fairtrade product sales in Britain increased by 12 per cent during 2008, and British shoppers  have continued to remain loyal to ethically produced products, with sales valued at £799 million. According to the Fairtrade Foundation. .

The slowly recovering economy helped sales momentum during 2009, and improved business sentiments helped boost sales growth.

To coincide with the start of Fairtrade fortnight which began on Monday the 22nd of February and runs until the 7th of March, the Fairtrade Foundation revealed data which suggests that both manufacturers and consumers are switching to Fairtrade ingredients and products.

Over 4,500 items have now been licensed to carry the Fairtrade mark, and theme of this year’s event is “the Big Swap” and the aim of the fortnight is to persuade more shoppers to swap regular items such as tea, coffee and sugar, for Fairtrade alternatives

Harriet Lamb, chief executive of the Fairtrade Foundation, said that despite the recession, British and Irish consumers are still “voting with their wallets for fairness and want to change the indignities of an unjust trading system”.

Lamb added: “These challenging times have been a wake-up call and forward-thinking companies have also been re-evaluating their priorities, seeing sustainability as the way forward for business, building relations with producers and introducing many Fairtrade products in the past year.”
